From the corner of my eye I could see that he had gone away from the crowd to inspect something of great interest.
Mesmerized, he stood off in a stance of great contemplation.
Thinking, strategizing, reasoning, reflecting…
His arms lay completely still by his side as if his entire body were meditating upon a problem of the most complex nature.
His eyes, the only part of his being making any movement; up and down—slowly examining a spectacle of which I could not see from where I stood.
What is he looking at?
I was unloading the car, unbuckling his siblings and grabbing bags from our picnic at the park, but each time I glanced in his direction he was in his own world, so deep into his own thoughts that he didn’t hear me call out to him, saying “whatcha looking at there, buddy?”
But he was transifixed and simply captivated. I saw him advance for further discovery. I saw him contemplate reaching out, then withdraw, then reach out…
until finally…
he gently reached and kept reaching. His touch was apprehensive–almost shy.
What is he looking at?
Then I saw that he was beginning to lean more into it with confidence and purpose. His entire body angled toward the mystery.
Walking over toward him, curious and searching this tree of the secrets that held my son captive, I say again “what *are* you looking at, P?”
Without turning away, and with all the seriousness that a child can behold–as if the very mystery of life itself rested within the line of his vision, he flatly declared…
THIS TREE HAS BOOBIES. IT’S A BOOBIE TREE.
True story.
The End.

Doesn’t every male in the world want a boobie tree? Perhaps even a whole forest of boobie trees?

as usual, I thought this was a thoughtful, artistic piece that would teach me something about the way little boys think…..and you know what I learned, that all boys are the same, they see boobies everywhere.
Loved this!!! xo
